JURIST: Wendy Rayson-Kerr

Bio Summary: I began studying fine arts immediately after high school in Montreal, where I grew up. I had wonderful teachers in drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, and art history. Some of my favorite instructors included Jean McEwen, Guido Molinari, John Fox, Giuseppe Di Leo, Russell T. Gordon, and Sandra Paikowski, among many others. While I began writing my MFA thesis, I chose to focus on raising my family instead and transitioned directly into motherhood. Those who have tried to create art while raising a family will understand why my artistic pursuits took a back seat for many years.

In Montreal I worked at several different Art Galleries: Stewart Hall Art Gallery, Gemst Gallery, La Galerie Mazarine. By 2007, we found ourselves in Belleville, Ontario and I started working part-time at the John M. Parrott Art Gallery in a clerical role. Later that same year, I transitioned to the Belleville Public Library, located one floor below the gallery, where I worked full-time as a Library Assistant. I frequently collaborated with genealogists, historians, and researchers, and I loved it.

In 2020, when the curator position opened at the Parrott Gallery, I eagerly seized the opportunity and haven’t looked back since. We have three large galleries for rotating exhibitions, a corridor gallery, and display cabinets, allowing me to curate over twenty shows each year. Our large Permanent Collection focuses on local art and includes over 100 paintings by Manly MacDonald. I’ve enjoyed meeting artists from all over Ontario, especially from the Quinte region, and I look forward to meeting artists from your area in September. I am thrilled to be invited to be the jurist for your 12th Annual Juried Show and look forward to the challenge.
