Nothing is truer than truth. All the mistakes committed by great artists are due to their having separated themselves from truth, believing that their imagination is stronger…Nothing is stronger than nature. With nature in front of us we can do everything well. (Joaquin Sorolla)
Artist”: A habitual practiser of a specific activity” ~ Oxford Dictionary
My habitual practise, traditional oil painting, some water colour and the act of drawing/sketching. Inspiration comes in many forms, usually the landscape. Starting with a meditative walk with ever present, constant companion, best friend “Ottie”. His quiet, pre-occupied demeanour leads to my observation and contemplation of our surroundings for the next painting. Changing seasons, weather and light make the landscape a common and challenging subject among artists. The challenge: to portray it in a different and interesting way that is unique to my experience. Be it realism or impressionism, how light provokes emotion or my use of colour, these things I try to capture in paint. Coming from an architectural illustration background means trying not to paint every detail I am attracted to. It’s an obstacle always in my way. I periodically appease the ‘beast’ by complying and rendering a still life.
