Bärbel was born in Germany and began painting at age eight when she immigrated to Canada. She received her formal training at the Alberta College of Art and has since travelled and lived across Canada and painted from coast to coast.

Her first show was at the Muttart Art Gallery in Calgary in the early eighties, and from there, varied juried shows with the Federation of Canadian Artists in Vancouver and Calgary; ongoing art venues across Ontario, as well as in her own studio. Bärbel’s paintings hang in corporate and private collections in BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, USA and Germany. She also offers art classes where she inspires artists of all ages in their appreciation for Canadian landscapes and the work of the masters.

Bärbel is a Canadian landscape artist who has extensively studied the works of Lawren Harris and the Group of Seven. Other influencers are Emily Carr, Doris McCarthy and Ted Harrison.

Artist’s Statement

My subject matter is the Canadian landscape and my method is smoothly applied paint whether acrylic or oil depends on my mood. I strive to see beyond the busy surface of things and capture the light, colours and shapes of the landscape. While each painting is inspired by on-site plein air studies and sketches; the final result is more transcendent, more spiritual. It becomes a place I want to revisit again and again.
My art is a form of communication for me, communication between heaven and earth. A way for my soul to reach out and touch the immortal; to catch a fleeting glimpse of God. Each body of work becomes an adventure where I can re-unite with creation and my own immortal being.

I am a nature lover and strive to preserve our natural landscape by using Canadian or locally sourced materials and supplies when creating my lyrical and stylized paintings.
