ARTIST STATEMENT
Giving pleasure to my viewers is my goal. Asking them to pause, look closer and see the element of humour I often inject into my work. With cryptic titles to accompany, I want the element of play, so important in my work, to cause a smile, chuckle, or bring back a happy memory.
BIOGRAPHY
I have been a painter and musician for most of my life. The two often go hand in hand don’t you think?
Born just outside of London England, my family emigrated to Canada when I was a young age, settling in the Burlington area. We lived in what was then a beautiful place, surrounded by trees, a river and undamaged green space. Birds, wildlife, flowers, so magical!
Observing and studying the natural world became second nature in this environment.
My Mothers eternal love of the garden and all things colourful, bright and beautiful was my encouragement to paint and draw the garden. My love of music was fostered by my father, “the language of my soul”.
Teaching myself guitar, I played and sang as a folk singer for many years, until I discovered the beauty of opera and was smitten. Studying privately and at the Royal Conservatory of Music, I trained as a coloratura soprano. Singing venues included touring England and Wales, Opera Hamilton, and the Shaw Festival to name a few. As an artist I am mostly self taught.
As life moves along I have enjoyed many careers, singer, artist, naturalist, librarian and Mother.
And now here I am realizing the importance the intertwining of all these gifts have been in creating the artist I am today.
My art practice is about experimentation. Delving into different ways of how I can express what it is I am internalizing. The spontaneity of being in the moment. I like to refer to it as a combination of painterly realism and abstract play. But the main goal is to provide joy to my viewers, as my life has brought to me.
