A Conversation With Trees

My recent collection of work, “A Conversation With Trees” explores the ancient law of life (birth, decay, death, regeneration), the spirit of the forest, and our connection to trees. It’s the result of years of close observation of trees and the resulting discovery that we all have a place that is special to each of us – a secret place, where one feels their authentic self, protected and inspired – mine is a forest.

The Colborne Art Gallery’s 5th Annual Juried Exhibition

On a beautiful Saturday July 8th, the treasured heritage building of Cramahe Township that 20 years ago became the Colborne Art Gallery was host to the opening of the Annual Juried Show. The gallery was packed with over 130 people present to celebrate the 27 artists whose work was chosen from among 109 pieces submitted for jurying by Eileen Menzel.

20th Anniversary Exhibition

The work of 38 artists whose past participation has built the only professional co-operative gallery in the area will be on display from May 27 to July 2, celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Colborne Art Gallery.

Women of a Certain Age

After middle age, women in our society can tend to feel invisible unless they do something dramatic or outlandish to draw attention to themselves. This show of paintings and drawings celebrates the natural vitality and beauty of older women as seen and captured by artists who are their contemporaries. It invites viewers to recalibrate how they measure attractiveness – and to look more closely at women of a certain age.

Calling All Young Artists

The Colborne Art Gallery is pleased to announce a call for entries for the
Second Annual Northumberland Youth Art Exhibition. All Northumberland

This particular show is entitled “Power of the Pen” – an exhibition of pen and ink drawings and paintings that speak to the pen and its ability to create powerful images in a simple yet striking way. He portrays culturally intriguing landscapes and found still life images.

In The Light of Change by Audrey Smith

May 28 to July 3, 2016. Opening reception May 28, 2 to 4 PM. Occasionally a painting can stop me! This is what happened when I entered The Colborne Art Gallery’s Juried Show in 2014 to see Audrey Smith’s 60-inch-tall piece titled, “Vulnerable.” My response was visceral—because it was a life-sized painting of a young woman, sitting on a chair and baring her soul. The composition of the piece was dynamic. No wonder it won the Juror’s Prize that year!

Northumberland Youth Art Exhibition 2016

Some of our community’s most creative ideas come from the minds and hands of our young people, but opportunities for youth to show their art to the public are few and far between. That’s why 11-year-old Zoe Bergeron was motivated to organize an exhibition for the youth of Northumberland County. Exhibition to be held May 28 to July 3, 2016. Opening reception May 28th, 2 to 4 PM.

Views from Here by Irene Osborne

October 3 to November 8, 2015 – Paintings by Irene Osborne. Osborne’s “Views from Here,” where “Here” signifies the heart, reveals an inner garden of creative exploration and artistic delights. In addition to the beautiful renderings of landscapes and the natural world for which she is known, this most recent collection contains many abstract pieces focusing on the creative journey.

Robot Home Movies by Rod Bergeron

Oct 3 to Nov 8, 2015 – Robot Home Movies is one part sci-fi, one part comedy and one part fun. I wanted to tell the story of three robots that come to life at the hands of a mad scientist. The robots go about the world in the most human-like ways. I am amused by the way they are accepted as human and I am amazed by the way human viewers feel compassion towards them, and the kindness and respect they inspire.

Vital Energy by Charles Funnell

Aug 22 to Sep 27, 2015 – Vital Energy, the very force that gives us life, is a concept that humanity has grappled with since the beginnings of conscious thought. Is it something to be harnessed, subdued, and channelled for personal benefit, or is it best left to its own natural course? However it may be perceived, one thing remains certain: Vital Energy is central to creativity, in any form. For Charles Funnell, this energy is not only the focus of his thought, but the force behind his masterful achievements in metal and mixed media.

Faces of Northumberland, New Work by Oliver Steins

May 30 – July 5, 2015 – Oliver Steins’ project began more than two years ago as he started taking portraits of friends and visitors to his shop, Ganaraska Art & Framing. Over time, the list of sitters grew to its current number of more than 150. Their stories are told in their faces, rather than in words. They can be thoughtful, questioning, ecstatic, or stern. All are captivating.
