July 9 – August 14, 2016
Opening Reception – Sat, July 9th from 2 to 4 pm
Once again this year, the member artists of The Colborne Art Gallery are honoured to be opening up our beautiful Heritage Gallery on July 9, 2016, to dozens of special guest artists in our 4th Annual Juried Exhibition.
It is always a pleasure to see the diversity and creativity being offered by both emerging and established artists, and summertime is the perfect season for visiting a gallery which has such a variety of art on display, carefully chosen by a professional curator and deftly presented by fellow artists.
Susan Holland, Curator of the John M. Parrott Art Gallery in Belleville, has taken on the challenge of jurying from among a strong panel of submissions. Of these, 50 works from 44 artists have been selected for the exhibition. Susan sends her congratulations to all of the artists who entered pieces. She was very impressed with the quality of work and had a tough time with the final selections. With space restrictions in mind, she has tried to choose a varied yet cohesive show. She hopes that you enjoy it.
A broad range of media are represented by the chosen works, including drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, mixed media, sculpture, ceramics, textile, and video. Artists who have submitted works represent a broad geographic range, from Milton, Brampton, Mississauga, Etobicoke, Toronto, Thomasburg, Bridgenorth, Brighton, Port Credit, Picton, Port Perry, Belleville, Cannington, North York, Oshawa and Warkworth. But the majority of the entries came from enthusiastic artists within Northumberland County.
As an artists’ collective, The Colborne Art Gallery strives to generate enthusiasm for the arts in our local community. The Annual Juried Exhibition has become an important facet in this outreach, providing an opportunity for artists to exhibit their creative expressions and gain valuable exposure through our gallery.
Applying to a juried exhibition can be an unnerving and ego bruising experience. It takes courage to expose one’s lovingly created artwork to scrutiny and sometimes scary to have it exhibited for all to see. Despite the possibility of disappointment of having work declined for an exhibition, most artists find that it is a worthwhile process for their artistic development. We wish to applaud all of the applicants for taking a chance on submitting their work and we appreciate the support this has provided for the gallery.
In offering an annual juried exhibition we wish to share our charming location and exceptional exhibition space. Perhaps this will be your first visit as you support a friend or family member who submitted to the exhibition. Once you’ve visited we hope you’ll become a regular, joining our dedicated group of supporters who attend our lively opening receptions or stop by on a visit to Colborne.
Several awards will be presented at the opening reception, including Juror’s Choice (selected by Susan Holland and sponsored by the members of The Colborne Art Gallery); Mayor’s Choice (selected by Mayor Marc Coombs and sponsored by Cramahe Township); Patrons Award (sponsored anonymously); two Honourable Mention Awards (sponsored by Cree Home décor and Organic products, Tamica Potter of Colborne and Sundance Gallery, Gerry Johnson of Grafton).
The opening reception and awards presentation with the artists present will be held on Saturday, July 9th from 2:00 to 4:00 pm. Please join us to meet our guest artists and enjoy the welcoming atmosphere at The Colborne Art Gallery. Admission is free and the gallery is fully accessible. The 4th Annual Juried Exhibition will run from July 9th to August 14th, 2016.
